So the other day I was talking to a friend of mine who works in the realm of staffing. She asked me to describe in a few words what I thought my ideal place of employment would be. I reciprocated “Fun,” “Energetic,” “Growth” and “Creative.” Here was her response:
“Why in God’s name are you working in this town then?”

This town is so far behind best practices, let alone your set of words. I am continually getting simiar questions when I start talking about my outside work. The Washington, DC area is three to four years behind the Bay Area and New York and farther behind Europe. My frustration with the area is getting unhealthy as I know there is little changing the major culture in the area, with is being safe and conservative in everything. There is little to no innovation or creativity here.
Don’t get me going on recruiting in the DC area, which is utterly miserable. I get tons of calls and e-mails from local recruiters that have seen my name in some publication or another. They are calling about entry-level positions completely unrelated to any subject in the article they said they found my name in.
I hear that!! Well, I have my eyes set on a different direction in two years or less. Here’s a hint; it doesn’t involve this town.
