After helping my friend, Chris, move into his new house a few weeks ago, I decided to stop by and see how his unpacking was going and how his foot was recovering over the Memorial Day weekend. The place is pretty much all put together and Chris and Steph seem to be all settled into their new place. His foot was out of the cast and is doing much better. Of course, a few weeks back it wasn’t all fun and games for Chris. During the move, Chris was a little incapacitated to say the least. A few weeks earlier, he broke his foot in a motorcycle accident, narrowly avoiding more injury than he sustained. He was in a hot pink cast for several weeks (his wife’s color choice) and he was unable to really help with the move. He more or less pointed and told us where to put things. He sat on the rear deck with a beer while all of us unloaded the moving trailer. He would look at us between swigs and say one of a few words “basement,” “upstairs,” “office,” “bedroom.” Luckily Chris rounded up a good many people and the move went rather quickly.
Although the move went smoothly, his accident a few weeks before was not as smooth of an event. A pack of about 20 of us were going to meet up at the local Bob Evans in Frederick, MD, grab some breakfast and then hit the road for a fun-filled afternoon of riding in West Virginia and Maryland. I arrived a little after 10:00 just as Chris instructed on the phone the night before. I waited outside for him, thinking he was just running a little late. Since it was a week or two before his move, I figured he was packing or doing some last minute stuff around the house before he hit the road. After about 30 minutes, I started to get a little worried. I tried calling him twice, with no luck. Once [Chris] Richter (not the same Chris that is late at this point) shows up, he proceeds to tell me that Chris was in an accident on South Mountain, just outside of Boonsboro, MD on Alternate 40 (Old National Pike). Luckily Chris hobbled away with only a broken foot and a little bit of road rash. He is now looking at Harley Davidson’s instead of another R6.
